The St. Louis County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney has confirmed that the decision will be announced later Monday. The area has been making preparations for weeks in anticipation of renewed rioting and looting following the decision, regardless of the outcome.

All schools in the Collinsville Unit 10 School District will be open tomorrow, Superintendent Bob Green said. Any field trips to St. Louis will be cancelled until it is determined that it is safe for students to travel to the area.

Green has spoken with many law enforcement officials in the Metro East, who do not anticipate civil unrest in Collinsville, he said.

The district will be monitoring the situation and ready to react if needed. A crisis plan, which includes preparation for civil unrest, has been in place at Unit 10 for about three years, Green said.

The administration meets quarterly with local law enforcement agencies, fire departments and emergency management services personnel to review the plan, Green said. If the plan needs to be enacted, including shutting down schools, the district is prepared.

“The most important thing is to keep the kids safe,” Green said.

Teachers have been encouraged to speak with students about the case, Green said.

I don’t want anyone talking to my kids about this and scaring them. If this goes bad, it’s going to be a repeat of rodney king and towns for hundreds of miles will be affected by this. My children will not be attending school on Tuesday.
