Police were called to the shrine on June 9 after a report that six landscaping plants were removed from various locations. Apparently happy with the price and quality of the plants, police say Devance Jordan returned on June 16 and took 27 more plants from throughout the grounds.

Using surveillance recordings and after the discovery of key items, Jordan was identified and taken into custody. Items taken from the shrine were recovered, Capt. Scott Weymouth, of the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department said.

Jordan was charged on June 17 with a felony count of theft from a place of worship.

The 52-year-old is currently awaiting sentencing on a theft charge from Oct. 30,2013. He pleaded guilty to the charge in December, but sentencing has been delayed and is scheduled for July 24. Jordan’s preliminary hearing on the shrine theft charge is June 27.

Jordan’s bond was set at $25,000.
