Former Brooklyn police officer with loaded gun charged with DUI

A man who identified himself as a Brooklyn, Ill., police officer during a traffic stop in Caseyville was charged Saturday with impersonating a police officer and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Harold J. Johnson, 56, of Brooklyn, was stopped by Caseyville Police at approximately 1:25 a.m. Saturday for a traffic violation. Johnson identified himself as a Brooklyn police officer and said he was carrying a loaded handgun.

Johnson was arrested for DUI and driving on a suspended license. It was determined that Johnson was terminated from the Brooklyn Police Department.

The St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Johnson Saturday with a felony count of impersonating a police officer and a misdemeanor count of DUI. Bond was set at $10,000. Johnson is currently in the St. Clair County Jail.
