The 66 year-old Caseyville woman shot Nov. 14 during a robbery attempt is expected to be released from the hospital by this weekend.

Judy Ferguson was shot six times and suffered 12 wounds – six entry and six exit wounds – during the incident, Police Chief Jose Alvarez said. Three of the wounds were very serious, but Ferguson “is doing extremely well,” Alvarez said.

Phillip W. Smith, 32, of the 8800 block of Parkdale Dr. has been charged with attempting to rob Ferguson TV, VCR and Satellite Service, attempted first degree murder and six counts of battery/discharging a firearm. All eight charges are Class X felonies.

The Caseyville Police Department has recently joined a violent task force initiative for armed robberies. Thanks to that association, 50 officers were on the scene in about 30 minutes, Alvarez said. Smith was captured about one hour after the theft occurred.

Smith is being held at the St. Clair County Jail on $3 million bond.

I heard last night that Judy has suffered a heart attack. This low life has taken so much from her and I hope he pays dearly. Judy would have given him the shirt off her back if he would have asked for it. That is how kind she is and this guy shoots her for a few bucks. Caseyville has a new chief in town and I hope he will prevail taking care of us and getting rid of all the crime Caseyville is seeing.
