Edwardsville wins state soccer championship

The Southwestern Conference boys soccer champions are now Illinois state champions.

Edwardsville knocked of Wheeling 2-1 Saturday to claim the Illinois Boys Soccer Class 3A state championship. The Tigers defeated Alton, Quincy, O’Fallon, Minooka, Sandburg and Naperville Central on their way to the title game in Hoffman Estates.

Brent Heinlein and Landon Paul scored the goals for Edwardsville in the championship match. Heinlein finished the season with 17 goals and 10 assists. His 44 points led the Southwestern Conference. Paul’s 34 points, on 13 goals and eight assists, were good for second-best in the league.

Edwardsville knocked off Collinsville 2-1 at Kahok Stadium on Sept. 17. The Tigers ended the season with a 21-3-2 record
