Flyers send basketball Kahoks to fourth straight defeat

East St. Louis, Ill. – East St. Louis senior Antonio Johnson’s clutch free throw shooting carried the Flyers to a 50-38 victory Tuesday over the visiting Collinsville Kahoks.

Trailing by eight points at the half, the Kahoks (3-4 overall, 0-2 Southwestern Conference) took advantage of a dismal third quarter to cut the lead to three points entering the final quarter. Collinsville outscored the Flyers 9-4 in the third stanza, before Johnson went 6-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help secure the victory for the home team.

Johnson scored eight of his game-high 17 in the decisive fourth quarter. The Flyers (3-3, 2-0 SWC) went 9-13 from the foul stripe in the quarter and scored 19 points. The win was the third straight for East St. Louis.

Collinsville committed a season-high 15 turnovers, shot 36 percent from the floor and managed only seven free throw attempts, connecting on five. The Kahoks were outrebounded 28-16, giving up 14 offensive boards.

Senior guard Anfirnee Wilkinson had a team-high 12 points, five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Ronnie Midgett also scored 12 points.

The Kahoks will look to break a four-game losing skid at O’Fallon Friday. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m.
