In July, a group of Latin students took a trip to Greece and Italy through the educational tour company, ACIS.

The tour, from July 8-16, took these students to Athens, Delphi, Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri, Vatican City, and Rome.  The seven students on the trip were Alyssa Capizzi, Steele Clement, Breanne Edwards, Erin Edwards, KD Kimbrell, Jace Plute and Thomas Steinwagner. The students were chaperoned by Latin teacher Kayla Hartmann and Steele’s mother, Shameem Coppotelli.

In Collinsville High School’s Latin program the students not only studied the Latin language, but also Greek and Roman history, culture, as well as mythology.  On the trip, the students were able to see many of the places and buildings they have studied in the past.

A few highlights from the trip were Pompeii, Capri, and Rome.  The ancient city of Pompeii was destroyed, and preserved at the same time, by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD–it is also a basis for the Latin stories in our school textbooks, making it even more important for the students.  The students were able to walk around the city and see how the ancient Pompeians lived.

The most beautiful place that the group visited on the tour was the island of Capri, Coppotelli said.  Some took an optional boat ride around the island seeing the amazing waters and scenery, others went up to Tiberius’ Villa Jovis and many spent time on Capri’s pebble beaches swimming and enjoying the view.  And of course, Rome was a major highlight of the trip, Coppotelli sai

“We saw the ruins of the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the catacombs.  Let’s not forget the delicious gelato, which we ate every single day,” Coppotelli said.
