The Collinsville Fire Department, which was leaving the scene of a boat fire when they were notified of the fires in the 100 block of Bluff Road in Collinsville, were first on the scene. The Fairview Heights, Maryville and Troy fire departments also responded.

When the Collinsville Fire Department arrived, they found fire pouring from the back of a home on the property as well as a blaze from a barn about 30 yards from the home. Lt. Frank Arnold said he made the decision to fight the barn fire first because it appeared to be more easily managed while the size, intensity and structure of the house caused Arnold to think it may be a total loss.

Despite the obstacles, the department had both fires contained in about 15 minutes and the house is not believed to be a total loss, Arnold said. No one was injured. An electricity line connecting the home to a nearby pole was melted, Arnold said.

A state fire marshal was called in to investigate both fires. Collinsville Fire Chief Mark Emert said the preliminary investigation by firemen found both fires were incendiary, or not an accident. The final decision will be made by the fire marshall.

The house and barn that caught fire early Sunday morning are part of a 108-acre-farm. It is not believed anyone has lived in the house for several years, since Thomas R. Maag passed away in 2011. Many household items were in the home at the time of the fire, but it is not clear if the items belong to The Sugar Camp Land Trust and the Thomas R. Maag Trust, co-owners of the land
