The Collinsville High School girls soccer team played Chatham Glenwood even for the first 50 minutes Saturday, before a pair of Titans’ goals in a one-minute span sent the visitors on their way to a 4-2 victory at Kahok Stadium.

The Lady Kahoks (0-1) went into the half tied at 1 with last year’s Class 2A champions and felt good about their chances in the second half, Head Coach Clay Smith said.

“We did some good things in the first half,” Smith said. “We made the right passes, we made the correct runs.”

Freshman forward Emily Holten scored a goal in her first varsity game to get the CHS on the scoreboard in the first half. Running toward the goal as the ball bounced out, Holten hit a one-timer into the back of the net.

“She hammered one in,” Smith said. “That was a great shot.”

The Titans (1-0) grabbed a 2-1 lead with 29:29 remaining, but the Lady Kahoks quickly evened it on a penalty kick from Sophia Sharos following a hand ball. Glenwood answered less than one minute later with the go-ahead goal and followed less than a minute later with another to provide the final 4-2 score.

“That’s something they always say, the other team scores after you score quickly. That’s something that can’t happen,” Smith said.

Despite the Titans controlling the ball much of the second half, the Lady Kahoks created chances.

“We just couldn’t find the back of the net in the second half,” Smith said. Their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves on Sophie, Mikayla hit one on the near post.”

Junior forward Kelly Graves scored a hat trick for Glenwood. Fellow junior Maggie Juhlin scored the other Titan’s goal.

“We had a couple of injuries we dealt with, but the bottom line is we made two or three mistakes today and Chatham capitalized on those mistakes,” Smith said.

The Lady Kahoks return to action at 6:45 Wednesday when they host Gibault High School in the “Kick it to Cancer” game. All proceeds from the contest will go to cancer research.
