Collinsville will have new faces in key offensive positions Friday as they look to secure their first Southwestern Conference victory in their last home game of the season.
The Kahoks (0-5 SWC, 1-6 overall) have been limping along with only one healthy running back since the second game of the season. Freshman Trevore Sanders and sophomore Zach Hammel-Brown have unsuccessfully tried to fill the void alongside junior Jamal Wellmaker, the third leading rusher in the conference,
“We have been doing a lot of things to try to survive magically, and that has put a large burden on Jamal,” Blaylock Head Coach John Blaylock said.
Hammel-Brown will move inside to replace junior fullback Jordan Miller, with Miller trying his hand at the wing position. Miller is not a typical wingback, Blaylock said, but he is a good, hard runner. Blaylock returns to the sidelines for the contest after a two-game absence. His absence was a personnel matter that school officials cannot legally discuss publicly.
Collinsville will also swap senior Connor Zabala from his typical starting quarterback position to wide receiver. Junior Anfirnee Wilkinson has been the team’s only threat at the position this year, hauling in 12 passes for 238 yards, compared to three catches for the second leading receiver, senior Duane Ackins.
Sophomore Jordan Reichert replaces Zabala under center. The pair teamed up on a nice touchdown near the end of the game last week when Reichert lofted a pass high into the end zone for Zabala, who cut in front of his defender to snatch the pass. The touchdown catch tied him with Wilkinson for the team lead.
Alton (2-3 SWC, 3-4 overall) will counter Collinsville’s revamped offense with a defense that challenges its opponents to maintain long drives, Blaylock said. “They keep things in front of them,” Blaylock said. “They are a good tackling team that does not give up a lot of big plays.”
Offensively, the Redbirds and Kahoks have similar philosophies. Both teams will run the ball, and then run some more.
Alton averages 13.7 pass attempts per game. Starting quarterback, junior Lavonte Hobbs, has completed just under 34 percent of his passes on the year, throwing one touchdown and one interception.
The Kahoks are even more reluctant to put the ball in the air, averaging eight passes per contest. Zabala completes about 36 percent of his passes, averaging one completion per game to the opponents. Reichart is 4 of 6 on the year, with a touchdown and no interceptions.
Kickoff on senior night is set for 7 p.m. at Kahok Stadium. The game will be streamed live at kahoksports.com.
