The Collinsville Memorial Library Center is inviting teens to learn more about up-and-coming technologies through a series of hands-on workshops.

Continuing monthly through May 2015, teens can learn about building a computer from scratch, using professional-grade graphic design tools, and more.

The programs in this teen tech series are on the last Wednesday of each month (except December 2014) at 6 p.m. and run approximately two hours. Upcoming topics are:

  • Nov. 26, 2014- Software Programming: Program some software to use with 3D-printed musical instruments. Presented by the St. Louis Science Center.
  • Dec. 17, 2014- Squishy Circuits: Use Squishy Circuits to make instruments interact with software programs. Presented by the St. Louis Science Center.
  • Jan. 28, 2015- Make a Computer from Scratch: Learn about computers from the inside out by taking one apart and putting it back together; participants get to take their computers home. Presented by Bill Dusenbury.
  • Feb. 25, 2015- Raspberry Pi and Computer Delights: Get some hands-on experience with the surprisingly powerful wallet-sized Raspberry Pi computers. Presented by Bill Dusenbury.

The Fairmont City Library Center, sister library to the Collinsville Memorial Library Center, is offering the same programs on the last Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.

These programs are free and open to 7th-12th graders living in the Mississippi Valley Library District or attending a Unit 10 school and holding a Teen Initiative library card. Spaces are limited, so registration is required. Register or learn more by calling the library at 618-344-1112 or visiting the main desk.

Funding for this program series was awarded by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Secretary of State/ Illinois State Library under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).

The Collinsville Memorial Library Center is located at 408 West Main Street and is a member of the Mississippi Valley Library District.
