The Collinsville Middle School baseball team defeated Carterville 3-2 Friday to win the Southern Illinois Junior High School Association state championship.
Carterville grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning against the Trail Blazers, who used their speed to steal a victory. Just as they had done in the semifinal game more than a week earlier, the Trail Blazers used a final inning rally to win.
Sam Phelps led off the 7th inning with a walk and promptly stole second. As the next hitter struck out, Phelps stole third and scored on an overthrow to tie the game.
Jacob Dumstorff earned a one-out walk and swiped second. Brendan Rasch’s two-out base hit scored Dumstrorff with the winning run.
Devon Bovinett shut the door on Carterville in the bottom of the 7th to seal the state championship for Collinsville Middle School. Bovinett worked all seven innings, surrendering only three hits and two walks. He fanned nine batters.
Rasch finished 2-3 in the title game with a run scored and the championship RBI.
CMS finished the season 17-4.
