The Collinsville Memorial Library Center is encouraging teens to “Turn Dreams into Reality @ Your Library!” during Teen Read Week October 12-18.

Teen Read Week is a national adolescent literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association.  It is held annually during the third week of October.

Teen Read Week celebrates reading for fun while encouraging teens to take advantage of reading in all its forms—books, magazines, e-books, audiobooks, and more. Moreover, strong reading skills are more critical than ever because they translate into better performance at school and better preparedness for careers.

The Collinsville Memorial Library Center will feature special events during Teen Read Week.

  • On Tuesday, Oct. 14, teens are invited to drop in for a scavenger hunt. Stop by anytime between 4 and 8 p.m. to get started.  Participants who successfully complete their scavenger hunt will be entered for a chance to win a prize.
  • Budding artists are invited to try Q-Tip painting on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Use these cotton swabs and paint to learn basic pointillism techniques at 4:30 p.m.  This program is free, but registration is required.
  • On Friday, Oct. 17 at 4:30 p.m., teens are invited to find their next literary love at a book speed dating event. Teens will “meet-and-greet” with several books for a few minutes at a time, like a speed dating event.  Participants will take notes about what they like or don’t like, and check out the book(s) they want to get to know better.  This program is free, but registration is required.

Parents of teens are also encouraged to celebrate Teen Read Week at home.  They can:

  • Set aside time each day for the family to read
  • Share your favorite book with your teen
  • Go online with your teen to learn about new books or authors by visiting ala.org/yalsa/reads4teens, or use YALSA’s free Teen Book Finder app
  • Listen to audiobooks on trips
  • Create a cozy reading corner somewhere in your home
  • Use meal time to talk about books that you’re reading

The Collinsville Memorial Library Center is a member of the Mississippi Valley Library District.  The Library Center is located at 408 West Main Street.
