A Collinsville man died early Thursday in a single-car accident in the 300 block of South Combs.

Eddie L. Williams, 25, of the 200 block of South Combs, was traveling northbound when his vehicle left the road and struck a utility pole on the east side of the street. The accident happened at approximately 12:15 a.m., Collinsville Police said.

There were no other occupants in the car. Williams died of blunt trauma to the chest, Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn said.

Williams was not wearing a seat belt, police said. The Collinsville Police Department is handling the investigation and accident reconstruction. There were no witnesses to the accident, police said.

Toxicology tests for the presence of drugs and alcohol will be performed, as required by state law, Nonn said.
