Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s soccer lost its first game of the weekend to IUPUI 2-1.
“It was not our best showing, we have a lot more to give,” said SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton. “We can’t play apprehensively at this level.”
The Cougars opened up the game strong with a header from junior Cassidy Sherman in the 35th minute. The goal was assisted by senior Michelle Auer.
“Michelle continues to have an impact on our scoring,” said Burton. “Sherman scoring the goal shows the impact she has on our team even after not being on the field for over a week. It’s great to have her back.”
IUPUI answered in the 41st minute with a goal by Tori Minnich. The Jaguars opened up the second half with a goal from Alyssa Fox.
The Cougars outshot the Jaguars 16-13. Junior goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley recorded six saves.
“The bottom line is that we need to have more players who are dedicated to every aspect of the game, not just the attractive one.” said Burton.
The Cougars continue their road trip Sunday at 12 p.m. against Purdue
