What started with a woman screaming for help on July 4 ended with two police officers kicked and the suspect on the receiving end of multiple Taser deployments and four felony charges.
Tyler W. Vaughn allegedly dragged a female in an apartment in the 500 block of Village Drive in Glen Carbon Friday and intentionally broke her mobile phone, police said. The victim screamed for someone to call the police. A neighbor heard her screams and called 911.
Vaughn, of the first block of Iris Avenue in Granite City, fled the scene before officers arrived. He was later found walking along a nearby bike path.
As Vaughn was taken into custody, he complained of heat inside the police vehicle, Detective David Zarr said. Out of concern for the suspect’s well-being, he was removed from the vehicle and the air conditioning turned on, Zarr said.
When he was placed back in the vehicle, the 22-year-old claimed to be suffering from a heart attack. When he was again removed from the vehicle, he began rolling on the ground and kicked both officers on the scene. Unable to subdue Vaughn, the officers each deployed his Taser. Neither officer was seriously injured during the scuffle.
Vaughn had pleaded guilty to felony domestic battery and was sentenced to probation on April 7. The domestic battery on July 4 was automatically elevated to a felony because of the prior conviction. For the most recent incident, he was also charged with two counts of aggravated battery of a peace officer and criminal damage to property over $300.
Bond was set at $100,000 for Vaughn, who is still in custody.
