Fairmont City woman intoxicated when car smashed into Alton building

Christana M. Martinez had a blood alcohol level more than four times the legal limit when the car she was driving struck the Con-Agra building in Alton on March 9.

ambulanceIn addition to a blood alcohol level of .365, Martinez had cocaine metabolites and citalopram (an antidepresent) in her system, according to a statement released Wednesday by Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn. Martinez died from head and chest injuries.

Martinez, 27, of the 2700 block of North 41st Street in Fairmont City, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Equinox when the accident occurred at about 5:11 p.m. March 9. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle. There were no other vehicles involved in the accident.

Martinez, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:56 p.m.

Madison County Police had been investigating an earlier crash involving the same vehicle and another car along the Great River Road, near Clifton Terrace Road, in Godfrey Township.
