The Southwestern Illinois College Astronomy Club, in conjunction with the Math and Science Club, wants to explore the solar system with you this summer!
The club continues its series of talks about space and all its wonders at the Belleville Campus, 2500 Carlyle Ave. A viewing session will take place at 8 p.m. after each meeting, weather permitting. The schedule of events for summer 2014 is as follows:
Solstices-Calendars is Thursday, June 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Main Complex First Floor Lounge. You’ve probably heard “So, what time is it?” many times and need only look at your cell phone. Before the advent of clocks, people used the motion of the Sun and the Moon to tell time. During this meeting, you’ll learn how the Solstice is associated with the sun’s position, dates, time and our location on Earth.
Kepler, O my, how big you’re getting the Solar System! is Wednesday, July 9 at 3 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Complex Theatre. During ancient times people thought Earth was the center of the universe. Ancient philosophers Aristotle and Ptolemy thought the planet stood still while everything else rotated around it. In this session, discover how Kepler’s analysis of Tycho Brahe’s observations changed the viewpoint of our earth from geocentric to heliocentric.
