Fans of superheroes are invited to a conversation about their cultural impacts at the Collinsville Memorial Library Center.

“Superheroes and Patriots: Comic Book Propaganda Unveiled,” to be held on Thursday, June 19 at 6:00 PM, explores how superheroes from Spider-Man to Superman have commented on and, in some cases, even shaped American public opinion and influenced American politics.  Often dismissed as a child occupation, comics are and have been far more influential and reflective of American culture and social mores than given credit for.  Presenter Brian Russell will outline how superheroes have been a consistent and very prevalent source of propaganda over the last century.  As new blockbuster films from the likes of Marvel and DC hit theaters every year, what message are superheroes promoting now?

Brian Russell is an Adjunct Associate Professor of History at Southwestern Illinois College.  He has taught at the college level since 2000 and has been an avid comic collector since age 12.  His favorite superheroes are Captain America and the Batman.  Russell has used comics to teach social and political aspects of history.

This program is free, but registration is required.  Please call the library at 618-344-1112 or visit the Main Desk for more information.

The Collinsville Memorial Library Center is a member of the Mississippi Valley Library District.

This program is sponsored in part through funding by the Illinois Humanities Council.
