In the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday, a Belleville East player hit a blooper to left field. Caity Brombolich raced in and dove forward for the ball, but it was just out of her reach. The ball bounced behind her and the Kahoks’ season was over.
Belleville East (27-6), the top seed in the four team Belleville East Regional, knocked off the fourth seeded Kahoks 11-1 in five innings to advance to Regional championship. Collinsville finished the season 17-19.
Despite the lopsided score, the Lancers did not hit the ball hard off Collinsville starter Addison Wickiser, Collinsville Head Coach Cindy Kolda said.
“I think they actually only hit the ball hard one or two times,” Kolda said. “We had quite a few missed opportunities defensively, easy outs that we did not take advantage of.”
Collinsville’s lone run was scored in the third inning. Sidney Bost walked and was sacrificed to second by Kadie Ringering. Becky Gibbs doubled home Ringering.
Senior Alison Mitts went the distance to get the win for Belleville East. The win was her 23rd on the season, against five defeats. She entered the game with a 1.31 ERA.
