New Collinsville High School shot put record holder Martinus Mitchell is The Metro Independent Athlete of the Week.

Mitchell set the CHS outdoor shot put record on April 18 in Granite City with a throw of 58 feet 1 inch. The throw is tops in the state this year.

The old record of 57-5 ¾, set in 1971, was held by Bernard Birger. Mitchell threw the shot put 60 feet 10 inches on March 22 at an indoor event in Charleston, Ill, the farthest indoor throw in the state this year and good for 14th best in the country.

Mitchell was also voted the CHS Athlete of the Month for March and, in February, was named a Character Student of the Month for exhibiting the trait of “be trustworthy – inspire others to believe in you.”

He will attend Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the fall to major in business and marketing, and to continue his shot put career.
