A day after a heart-pounding, come from behind, 10 inning victory, the Collinsville High School baseball team cruised to a 13-3, five-inning victory at Cahokia.
The Kahoks (5-0) used 12 players and scored in the first four innings, before the Comanches (0-1) held them scoreless in the fifth and final frame. Collinsville scored a lone run in the first before plating three in the second, six in the third and three more in the fourth.
Zach Mathes started for CHS and threw three perfect innings, striking out six. Head Coach Pete Trapp was impressed with the senior’s effort.
“He looked really great,” Trapp said.
Justin Anson finished the game, allowing three runs in two innings. Trapp said Anson pitched well, but the Comanches put the ball in the play, which makes things happen.
“In high school, a lot of hits are just from hustling out of the box on a softly hit ball,” Trapp said.
Grant Bauer and Mathes paced the Kahoks offensively with two hits each. Bauer also scored three runs. After missing the first three games of the season, Bauer has four hits in the last two games.
“He is an important part of the puzzle,” Trapp said. “We were lucky to get the three wins without him.”
Collinsville returns to Fletcher Field for a 4:30 p.m. game Monday against Wheaton Warrenville South. Kyle Reeves will get the start. The Kahoks open league play Tuesday at O’Fallon with Tanner Houck on the mound.
