After basking in the radiant heat of normal and above normal temperatures for an entire week, the Collinsville area will wake up to freezing rain, snow and sleet Sunday, the National Weather Service is predicting.
The current forecast, subject to change frequently as the mass of winter weather makes its way out of Oklahoma, through Missouri and into the Metro East, calls for wintry precipitation to begin overnight Saturday, into Sunday morning. The sleet and freezing rain will give way to snow at some point in the early afternoon hours Sunday. Snow is expected to continue falling into the evening.
The National Weather Service is calling for total snow and sleet accumulation of 1-3 inches throughout the day and evening Sunday.
The maximum temperature Sunday is expected to reach 32, with wind gust up to 34 mph. Winds will calm overnight, but Monday’s high will be in the low 40s, about 15 degrees below normal for St. Patrick’s Day in St. Louis.
The two-day cold snap will give way to temperatures approaching normal on Tuesday and Wednesday.
