Two students who ensured lost money found its owner, and one who is a true friend to a group of special needs students have been named the Collinsville High School Character Education Students of the Month for February.
Selected as the students at CHS who best embodied the Unit 10 character education trait of the month, “be trustworthy – inspire others to believe in you,” were Joanna Beauchamp, Zoe Howell and Martinus Mitchell.
Beauchamp and Howell, who are both members of the CHS girls bowling team, found $40 on the floor of the Cherry Bowl bowling alley, in Rockford, on the first day of the Illinois High School Association State Tournament this year. The pair asked around, but were not able to find the owner, and turned the money over to the coaching staff, who turned it in to an official.
The girl who lost the money soon contacted the tournament director and was reunited with her money. Head Girls Bowling Coach Sean Hay said the ladies actions displayed their character to their coaches and “represented the same character to other schools and the IHSA.”
Mitchell can be found having lunch every day with a group of special needs students. He is a true friend to the students and gives them a positive start to the day, CHS instructional aides report to math teacher Mike Liljegren, who nominated Mitchell.
“I believe his daily actions are inspirational and deserving of recognition,” Liljegren said.
