Caseyville teen turned in by father faces felony charges in three counties

A tip from a concerned father to Caseyville Police on Jan. 22 may have solved more than two dozen burglaries in three counties.

The father of Tyler W. Ashcraft, 18, of the 200 block of Oliver Street, Caseyville, alerted police that his son may be in possession of stolen property. It was later determined that Ashcraft had items from residential and car burglaries in Monroe County, St. Clair County and Madison County, police said.

After a joint investigation by Caseyville Police, the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force, Columbia and Collinsville police, Ashcraft was charged with 21 counts of burglary from a motor vehicle and three counts of residential burglary in Monroe County, two felony counts of residential burglary in St. Clair County and three counts of felony burglary in Madison County. Ashcraft is being held in the Madison County Jail.

Three other suspects face charges in the string of burglaries. Zachary S. Wood, 18, of the 200 block of Oliver Street, Caseyville, was charged with 15 counts of burglary from a motor vehicle and two counts of residential burglary in Monroe County as well as one felony count of residential burglary in St. Clair county. Wood is being held in the St. Clair County Jail.

James D. Garrett, 19, of the 600 block of Hill Road, Caseyville, was charged with one felony count of residential burglary in St. Clair County. Garrett is is being held in the St. Clair County Jail.

Kerry M. Gum, 19, of the 1000 block of Hollywood Heights Road, Caseyville, was charged with four counts of burglary from a motor vehicle and one count of residential burglary in Monroe County.

Another suspect is a juvenile from Collinsville, who is still being sought on 21 counts of burglary from a motor vehicle and three counts of residential burglary in Monroe County.
