Still struggling to dig out of the mess caused by approximately 12 inches of snow, wind gusts in excess of 30 mph and bitter cold temperatures, the Collinsville area was experiencing another round of snowfall early Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory until noon, Thursday, Jan. 9.

With total accumulation of less than an inch in the immediate area expected, the snow arrived in the overnight hours Thursday and is predicted to mix with freezing drizzle and drizzle (when the temperature surges to just above freezing in the early afternoon) throughout the day and, possibly, through the night.

The wintry precipitation and cloudy skies Thursday could signal the fifth consecutive day of cancelled classes for the Collinsville Unit 10 School District. The lack of clear sidewalks were a major consideration in cancelling school Thursday, Superintendent Bob Green said.

“We have a lot of small children that walk to their bus stop or to school, it isn’t safe for them to walk in the street,” Green said. “We are going to error on the side of the safety of the kids.”

Relief may arrive as early as Friday, with a forecast high of 47 degrees and occasional rainfall throughout the day and night. Standing water could become the next concern for Kahoks Country.
