An angry coach with a microphone and a reporter with a video camera and YouTube access can be a combustible combination.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale Men’s Basketball Coach Barry Hinson is the latest to discover the power of the formula. Hinson was, perhaps, a bit too honest in his post-game news conference following the Saluki’s 73-65 loss Tuesday at Murray State, which dropped his team to 2-8 on the season.
The episode has made headlines around the country as the latest coaching rant to go viral on YouTube. The video can be seen here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQKbLsoCt28).
The second-year coach called players “momma’s boys,” “soft” and “un-coachable.” At one point Hinson tells the gathered media, “I’ve been telling my wife this for years, size doesn’t matter.”
Hinson’s wife, Angie, is not finished with her starring role. The coach tells reporters that she is capable of doing better than 2-11 from the floor, as his big men did during the Murray State game.
“My wife, my wife can score more than two bucket on 11 shots,” Hinson said, his voice rising. “Because I know my wife will at least shot fake one time.”
Hinson’s tirade joins the tradition started with Saints coach Jim Mora famous playoff rant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qwq7BYOnDrM) and continued with such fine examples as Mike Gundy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoMmbUmKN0E) of Oklahoma State.
