East St. Louis and Edwardsville finally met some resistance on their runs through the Illinois High School Association state playoffs.
After winning their first two playoff contests by a combined score of 101-28, the Edwardsville Tigers (12-0) secured a spot in the semifinals with 21-14 victory over Lincoln-Way East (9-3), of Frankfort. The Flyers (9-3) dispatched of Normal Community West and Normal by a combined 71-22, before squeaking by New Lenox Providence Catholic (7-5) 27-26 Saturday.
Both Southwestern Conference teams will host their respective semifinal contests. Unfortunately for fans hoping to see both teams, they are each playing on their home field at 3 p.m. Saturday.
East St. Louis welcomes Richards High of Oak Lawn (11-1) to Clyde C. Jordan Memorial Stadium for a 3 p.m. contest Saturday. The game date and time will be announced Monday at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs defeated Yorkville 44-0, Argo, of Summit, 31-0 and Lincoln-Way North 12-6 in overtime to advance to the semifinals.
The winner of the Flyers and Bulldogs game will play the winner of the Batavia (11-1) at Boylan Catholic (12-0), of Rockford, contest for the state championship. The Class 6A title contest is at 1 p.m. Saturday Nov. 30 at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.
Edwardsville, the last unbeaten team in Class 7A, will host Chicago Mt. Carmel (11-1) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Tiger Stadium. The Caravan, of the Chicago Catholic League, downed Benet Academy, of Lisle, 49-6, Chicago St. Rita 20-15 and Downers Grove North 7-0 to advance to the semifinals.
The winner of the Tigers and Caravan contest will play the winner of the Lake Zurich at Glenbard West, of Glen Ellyn, game for the state championship. The Class 7A title contest is at 4 p.m. Saturday Nov. 30 at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.
