The top two football teams in the Southwestern Conference this year continue to look like two of the top teams in the state, turning in dominating second-round playoff performances.
Edwardsville moved to 11-0 on the season after thrashing Bradley Bourbonnais (7-4) 42-0 Saturday, at Bradley-Bourbonnais. The 42-point margin of victory was better than the Tigers’ regular season average of nearly 34 points per game.
The Tigers’ will host Lincoln-Way East (9-2), of Frankfort, in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m Saturday. Lincoln-Way East defeated Plainfield East 31-0 in the first round and Oswego East 57-40.
East St. Louis (8-3) notched its seventh straight win, defeating Normal Community High (9-2) 38-16 Saturday. East St. Louis defeated Normal Community West in round one and Normal Community defeated Bloomington. Having successfully knocked out all 6A playoff contestants from the Bloomington-Normal twin cities, the Flyers can now play an opponent outside the 309 area code.
New Lenox Providence Catholic (7-4) provides the next test for the Flyers. The Celtics defeated Crete-Monee 25-14 and Quincy 55-27 to move into the quarterfinals. East St. Louis will travel to New Lenox for a 1 p.m. contest Saturday.
