Two Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s soccer players are among this week’s honorees in the Ohio Valley Conference. Tory Pitts was selected as the co-Offensive Player of the Week. Jennifer Pelley was honored as the Goalkeeper of the Week.
The selections come on the heels of the Cougars’ first-ever road sweep in OVC play. SIUE defeated Murray State 5-2 Friday and then shut out Austin Peay 1-0 Sunday.
Pitts enjoyed her best weekend as a Cougar. In Friday’s win over Murray State, Pitts assisted on the game-winning goal with a throw-in to Marissa Delgado before adding a goal of her own later in the match. On Sunday, Pitts also assisted on the game-winning goal at Austin Peay. Pitts received a long free kick and was able to make the final pass before Christine Martinez finished for the go-ahead goal.
The graduate student is second on the team in scoring with 10 points coming on three goals and four assists. Her 10 points are tied for eighth-best in the OVC. Her four assists are tied for third most in the league. The award is the first weekly honor for Pitts from the OVC.
Pelley played all 180 minutes in goal to pick up two road wins for the Cougars. On Friday, she made six saves and did not allow a goal after halftime, allowing SIUE to come back for the win. Pelley made four saves Sunday to shut out the conference’s best offense in a 1-0 win at Austin Peay. The shutout is Pelley’s OVC-leading sixth of the year and 15th of the sophomore’s career.
Pelley’s goals against average of 0.63 is second lowest in the OVC. This award marks the third time this season and the eighth time in her career Pelley has been chosen as the Goalkeeper of the Week.
The Cougars conclude the home schedule Sunday at 1 p.m. when they play host to Jacksonville State at Korte Stadium.
