Three games, three overtime loses for SIUE men’s soccer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the third time in as many games this season, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s soccer dropped an overtime decision, falling to Memphis 2-1 in double overtime Wednesday at Mike Rose Stadium.

SIUE dropped to 0-3 with the defeat, all three of which have come in overtime.

The Tigers’ Benjamin Ciosanski gave Memphis (1-1) its first win of the season with the goal in the 105th minute. Ciosanski lofted a shot from the left side just outside the box into the far corner of the goal to end the match.

Christian Volesky got the Cougars off to a fast start with his second goal in as many games in the 10th minute of play. Volesky received a pass from Garet Christianson in the box before scoring past Memphis goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui to the left.

The Cougars took the 1-0 lead into halftime. It was the first time this year SIUE had led at half.

Memphis drew level in the 52nd minute. After an initial shot was saved by SIUE goalkeeper Kent Kobernus, Fakhry Khulfman collected the rebound and poked it home to even the score at 1-1.

SIUE created chances during extra time, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Cougars outshot the Tigers 5-1 in overtime. SIUE had a 4-0 shot advantage in the first overtime period. For the game both sides finished with 13 shots. Volesky led the way for the Cougars with five shots, including three on goal.

Kobernus finished with one save for SIUE. Uzcategui made three saves in the win for Memphis.

The Cougars return home for a 7 p.m. game Saturday against Butler at Korte Stadium.
