The Madison County Sheriff’s Department is working to determine if the two attempted shootings in State Park Thursday are related, Lt. David Vucich said.

There are currently no suspects in custody, but the department is investigating persons of interest.

The State Park resident who posted on Facebook Thursday afternoon that her husband and two sons were in a truck that was the intended target of the second shooting, indicated that a minor had been taken into custody, then released. Vucich said he could not confirm that report.

No intended victims of either incident were harmed, Vucich said.

Anyone with information about the shootings should contact the Madison County Sheriff’s office at 692-4433.

Two attempted shootings Thursday in State Park, only hours apart, left people running for cover, but uninjured.

Crime NewsA shot fired at a man working on a Bobcat at Metro East Recycling, 9200 Collinsville Road, came within inches of its target early Thursday afternoon. Video from a nearby business showed a white car approach Metro East Recycling and a man on a Bobcat reacting to what appears to be gunshots, a person who works at the nearby business said. The employee asked to not be identified for this story.

The employee, who reviewed the video along with officers from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, said the man on the Bobcat seems to pause after the first gunshot, unsure what happened, and jumped from the equipment after the second shot missed him. The man did not appear to be struck by either shot, the employee said.

The employee had a close-up view of the Bobcat at the scene.

“There was a bullet hole in the Plexiglas, in the back of Bobcat, about three or four inches from where his head would have been,” the employee said.

Several hours later, the employee heard another set of gunshots, which the employee initially thought were firecrackers coming from the basketball court on Fairmont Avenue. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department responded again, the employee said, closing Fairmont Avenue and a portion of VFW Lane.

The second attempted shooting, the employee believes, involved a juvenile trying to settle a score with a former classmate and is not related to the first shooting. A State Park resident posted on Facebook Thursday afternoon that her husband and two sons were in a truck that was the intended target and all were unharmed.

The lack of police protection in State Park is egregious. That’s particularly true in St. Clair county.
