The Oilers (4-8) jumped on top with three runs in the top of the first inning, but starter Sidney Bost shut the door the rest of the way. Despite the three-run first, Collinsville High School coach Cindy Kolda said Bost did not pitch poorly.

“She didn’t have a terrible first inning, she only gave up two hits,” Kolda said. “She battled back very well.”

Bost was helped by some curious Oiler base running in the third. Katie Hall led off the inning with a single and was waved around to home on a one-out double by Caroline Campbell. Hall was caught in a rundown and tagged out between third and home.

Campbell attempted to take third on the play. When the ball trickled free past the bag, Campbell was waved home, where she was also caught in a rundown and tagged out at the plate.

The Kahoks’ offense took a few innings to warm up on a frigid and drizzly afternoon at the Collinsville Jaycee Sports Complex. After going down in order in the first, Collinsville (8-3) scored a run on two errors, a sacrifice bunt and no hits in the second.

Two triples highlighted a four-run fourth for Collinsville. Carlee Mahan was plunked in the left elbow to lead off the inning and circled the bases to score when Becky Gibbs drilled an opposite field triple into the right-center field gap. Gibbs scored on the play when the throw from the outfield rolled through the infield and to the Kahoks’ dugout on the third base line.

Alex Holten hit an opposite field triple down the right-field line four batters later to score Emily Lautz, the designated runner for catcher Kassidy Smith, who had reached on an error. Holten trotted home on a wild pitch.

Collinsville started hitting when the team made adjustments against a quality East Alton-Wood River starter, Victoria Beachum, Kolda said.

“They moved up in the box and they were able to hit that outside pitch,” Kolda said. “A couple of them went with the pitch and they changed the game.”

The Kahoks salted the game away with an eight-run, eighth inning, including three straight on either a walk or a hit-by-pitcher. Kaliegh Young replaced Beachum during the inning and struggled to find her command. When she did, Sarah Scrum and Samantha Buettner had RBI singles.

Collinsville scored 13 runs on only six hits for the game.

The Kahoks travel to Granite City Tuesday looking for their first conference win. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
