A Fairmont City woman died Sunday afternoon when her vehicle left the roadway and struck a concrete barricade near Broadway and State Street in Alton.

ambulanceChristina Marie Martinez, 27, of the 2700 block of North 41st Street in Fairmont City, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Equinox when the accident occurred at about 5:11 p.m. Sunday. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle, Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn said in a statement. There were no other vehicles involved.

Martinez, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:56 p.m. An autopsy Monday morning indicated that Martinez died from head and chest trauma.

Madison County Police had been investigating an earlier crash involving the same vehicle and another car along the Great River Road, near Clifton Terrace Road, in Godfrey Township. Toxicology tests for alcohol and drugs will be performed, Nonn said.

Funeral arrangements are pending, but are under the direction of Kassly Mortuary in Fairview Heights, Illinois.
