-updated-Former Collinsville football player, 23, dead from gunshot wound

Collinsville Police have confirmed that the person who died of a single gunshot wound to the head in the early hours of Sunday morning was Andrew M. Birch, 23, of Collinsville.

ambulanceThe incident occurred in Birch’s home in the 600 block of Arrowhead Drive, Collinsville. Police were called to the residence around 1:30 a.m. Birch was transported to Anderson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead five days before of his 24th birthday.

There were three other people in the home with the former Collinsville High School football player at the time of the incident, Assistant Police Chief Tom Coppotelli said.

“People have been interviewed and interviews are continuing,” Coppotelli said. “The investigation is fluid at this time. Everyone is cooperating.”

No one is in currently in custody related to the incident. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow, Coppotelli said.
