Collinsville got off to slow start Saturday, scoring only eight points in the first quarter, before cruising to a 47-28 victory over Pittsfield in the final game of the Jerseyville Tournament.

The Saukees (6-13) held a 10-8 lead over the Kahoks (8-11) after one quarter, but managed only 18 points the remainder of the game. Collinsville Head Coach Darin Lee said the team played well defensively, continuing a recent trend. Jacob Shaffer drew the short straw defensively.

“He guarded their best player (Wayde Smith),” Lee said. “He held him to eight points after he scored 26 the night before, he was probably tired from that.”

Smith scored all eight of his points in the first quarter.

Shaffer overcame any fatigue to score 12 points. He scored in double-digits in each of the four games during the tournament, averaging 12 points.

After Shaffer scored 9 of the Kahoks’ 19 first-half points, Anfirnee Wilkinson took over, scoring 11 of Collinsville’s 13 third-quarter points and 16 second-half points. Pittsfield scored only 15 in the final half.

Wilkinson finished with a game-high 18 points, his seventh straight game in double figures. Since scoring only two points against Quincy on Dec. 28, Wilkinson has averaged 15.3 points per game.

As the score would suggest, neither team shot the ball very well. Pittsfield managed a meager 16 percent shooting from the floor (9-56) and 2-22 (9 percent) from beyond the arc. Collinsville managed 34 and 35.7 percent respectively. Nine players scored for the Kahoks

Trailing by 13 entering the final frame, the Saukee attempted to foul to close the gap. The Kahoks responded, dropping in 8-9 from the charity stripe in the period.  Wilkinson was 5-6 in the quarter, Wethers 2-2 and Collinsville finished the evening 12-15 from the free throw line.

Collinsville finished 2-2 at the Jerseyville Tournament, good enough for third place. Lee was not satisfied with the result.

“We thought we’d do better, but we got a couple of wins,” Lee said.

Collinsville stays on the road to face O’Fallon Friday night in a Southwestern Conference matchup, before returning to CHS to face Mascoutah Saturday. Both games start at 7:30.

The following is to add to the article: Chambers pulled in 12 rebounds stepping in for the injured Rickman. Wilkinson helped Shaffer in holding Pittsfield’s Smith to 8 points and managed to still score 18 points with Smith (Pittsfield’s best defender). So those two players deserve recognition for their play in this game. Go Kahoks!

Correction: with Smith (Pittsfield’s best defender) guarding him.
