The Collinsville High School girls basketball team used a 10-0 run to build an 8-point, third-quarter lead, but could not hold it, eventually losing 52-44 to Belleville East in a Southwestern Conference game.
The contest got off to a slow start, with the Lancers (5-2 SWC, 8-6) leading 6-5 after one quarter of play. Collinsville Head Coach Lori Billy said her team played good defense, but “got panicky” in the first quarter and committed too many turnovers.
The game went back and forth throughout, with Belleville East holding a 2-point lead after the second and third quarter. The Kahoks (1-4 SWC 3-8) trailed by four points midway through the fourth quarter, when they switched to a trap defense hoping to overcome the deficit. Montira Mosby took advantage of defensive switch, scoring 13 of her game high 27 points in the final quarter.
“We just lost Mosby behind the defense a few times,” Billy said. “We did pretty well against her when we were in the zone.”
Despite not playing a game since Dec. 21, Billy said the team played well. “We played better tonight and had some things happen that were good.”
Aubreeney Brady led the Kahoks with 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Lexie Thompson, Julie Scheiter and Kassidy Smith contributed six points each. Carlee Mahan added four. Samantha Buettner, Caitlyn Brombolich, Gabby Morgan and Tere Beckly each scored two points.
The Lady Kahoks play their second re-scheduled game in two nights when they host Granite City at Vergil Fletcher Gym Saturday night. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
