The Southern Illinois University Carbondale men’s basketball team is again making headlines for something happening off the court.

Less than a month after Head Coach Barry Hinson’s post-game rant after a loss to Murray State went viral, the team is drawing national attention because their team bus became stuck on Interstate 57 following a loss to Illinois State in Normal. In a story told 140 characters at a time, members of the team began Tweeting about their experience at about 6:15 p.m., shortly after the team bus departed Normal.

The snowstorm that blanketed much of Illinois Sunday caused for treacherous driving on Interstate 57. The bus set out for Carbondale despite the conditions, and made it only to the outskirts of Champaign, about 53 miles from Normal.

Many of the players occupied themselves with Twitter during the seven hours that elapsed before a tow truck arrived to dislodge the bus. The Tweets soon drew a national audience. People from around the country wished the team well and struck up conversations. Producers from national news programs attempted to reach players via Twitter to arrange interviews.

After the bus was freed, the team found its way to Tuscola, Ill, about 23 miles south of Champaign. The team, apparently unable to find accommodations in a hotel, ended their adventure sleeping on a church floor.
