Updated – The great blizzard of 2014, the forecast for Collinsville

A light snowfall began in the Collinsville area around 3 a.m. The most recent National Weather Service forecast calls for snow to continue throughout Sunday, ending by 7 p.m. Total expected accumulation around the 62234 zip code is 10-14 inches.

A chance of thunder has been thrown into the forecast. A winter storm warning is in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday.

A wind chill warning will be in effect from 6 p.m Sunday to noon Tuesday, Jan. 7.  Wind chills are expected as low as -35 during that time frame.

You may not have heard, but nasty weather is predicted to hit the St. Louis area, beginning Saturday evening.

SevereWeatherAdvisory-WinterA winter storm warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Saturday until 3 p.m. Sunday.

The National Weather Service is predicting rain, snow and sleet to hit the Collinsville area this evening, before 10 p.m. The precipitation is expected to change to snow and sleet between 10 and 11 p.m, then all snow after 11 p.m. Total sleet and snow accumulation of 1-3 inches overnight. Chance of precipitation is 61 percent at 9 p.m., 68 percent at 11 p.m., and 100 percent at 3 a.m..

The Sunday forecast calls for additional snow accumulation of 7-11 inches in the immediate area, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The chance of snow is 100 percent until 11 a.m, dropping to 97 percent until 3 p.m. and becoming unlikely after 3 p.m.

An arctic front will bring falling temperatures and wind gusts up to 32 mph during the day, Sunday. The overnight low is expected to be -10.

The wind and snow combination Sunday is expected to create near blizzard conditions.

Monday plans should include a great deal of indoor time. The projected high of -3 Fahrenheit would register as -19.4 Celsius in Canada, and the weather will be very Canadian. Wind gusts up to 26 mph and possible flurries will accompany partly sunny skies.

The high temperature Tuesday is projected to climb all the way to 15 degrees, Fahrenheit.
