Charges filed in murder of Collinsville man

An East St. Louis man was charged today with first-degree murder in the death of Jarrett D. Mosby, 21, of Collinsville.

court-hammerDeneshion M. Swope, 24, faces three felony murder charges in the Dec. 23 death of Mosby, whose body was found in his car in Madison. Police allege Swope shot Mosby seven times with a 9 mm handgun.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis determined that Swope and Mosby were acquaintances who agreed to meet in the early morning hours of Dec. 23. Investigators believe Swope intended to buy marijuana from Mosby, authorities said.

It is believed that Mosby and Swope began arguing in Mosby’s car at 10th and State Street in Madison, where Swope shot Mosby, before moving the car to 2nd and Bissell, where Mosby’s body was found at 12:44 p.m., Dec. 23. Mosby was pronounced dead at the scene, the Madison County State’s Attorney’s office said.

Swope is being held in the St. Clair County jail before being transferred to the Madison County Jail, where he will be held on $500,000 bond. He is currently on probation for federal gun charges.

The maximum penalty for first-degree murder is 20-60 years in prison. If convicted, Swope and will be required to serve 100% of his sentence, the Madison County State’s Attorney’s office said.
