Collinsville capped a 27-turnover night with three critical giveaways in the final 1 minute 17 seconds Monday, sending the Lady Kahoks to their sixth consecutive defeat, 48-43 against Althoff.
The Lady Kahoks used an 8-0 run to end the third quarter, capped with a buzzer beating jumper by sophomore forward Gabby Morgan, to take a six-point lead into the fourth quarter. The basket by Morgan was the final field goal of the evening for Collinsville (2-6).
Four Crusaders (3-0) contributed to the team’s 11-0 run to begin the final quarter. The streak was broken when sophomore Kassidy Smith made a pair of free throws with 3:09 remaining to pull Collinsville to within 46-43. The free throws proved to be the only points scored for the Lady Kahoks in the quarter.
Collinsville’s attempts to come back in the fourth quarter were often met with a turnover or missed opportunity. With 1:35 remaining, junior guard Auburneey Brady stole the ball and missed a layup. The ball clanked off the rim and was corralled by a Kahoks player, who was tied up. The possession arrow favored the Lady Kahoks, who turned the ball over on the ensuing play.
The Lady Kahoks added two more turnovers towards the end of the game. Collinsville Head Coach Lori Billy said the team had to get better at handling end-of-game situations.
“We were trying to get the ball down the floor too quickly,” Billy said. “We have to settle down.”
After trailing 18-15 at the end of one quarter, Collinsville held a lead at the end of the second and third quarters. Junior guard Aubreeney Brady led the way in the first three quarters, scoring 11 points. Smith scored 10 points through the first three quarters and added two fourth-quarter free throws to complete the scoring.
Morgan and Carlee Mahan added six points for the Lady Kahoks. Junior forward Samantha Buettner and sophomore guard Caitlyn Brombolich added four.
Freshman Kyliegh Vaught led Althoff with 10 points. Eight players scored for the Crusaders.
