Playing in its third consecutive road game, the SIUE men’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss against No. 18 Louisville Tuesday night at Cardinal Park.

“Our overall performance was much improved since the last game we played (at DePaul),” Head Coach Kevin Kalish said.  “We were better on both sides of the ball, but we were unable to finish the game off.”

The Cardinals (5-2-0) scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half when Nolan Moore scored in the 65th minute off an assist from Santiago Velez.

“The game usually comes down to a few moments and that was the case tonight,” Kalish said.  “Louisville is a good team and they found the goal they needed.  We had moments ourselves but were unable to capitalize on those good chances.”

SIUE (4-4-0) held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks, while Louisville out shot the Cougars by an 11-8 margin.  Forward Christian Volesky led the visitors with seven shots.

Goalkeeper John Berner made one save for SIUE, as the Cougars limited the Cardinals to just two shots on goal.

SIUE now returns home to prepare for a 7 p.m. matchup with UIC at Korte Stadium Saturday night.

The match against the Flames will be the first of two straight home games for the Cougars, who open their Missouri Valley Conference schedule against Central Arkansas on Oct. 5.

“The team is a bit tired from the long road trips during this first part of the season, but we will recover and be stronger for it down the stretch,” Kalish added.  “This team has a lot of determination, has improved, and will continue to improve as we enter conference play.”
