A man convicted of having heroin in his Maryville apartment, with the intention of selling it, was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in prison, a spokesperson for the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office announced.
Ronald Lewis, 40, was charged on June 24, 2011 with one count of unlawful possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, a Class 1 felony. Lewis was charged along with co-defendant Nancy Zawec, 37, of Maryville, who faced the same charge.
Maryville police discovered Zawec attempting to sell heroin outside Humdinger’s bar in Maryville on Feb. 18, 2011. More heroin was later located at the Maryville apartment Zawec and Lewis shared, officials said.
Zawec pleaded guilty in December 2011 and testified for the prosecution during Lewis’ trial. Lewis was convicted on July 17, 2013. Zawec is awaiting sentencing.
The conviction was Lewis’ third felony conviction. Prosecutors sought a sentence of 17 years in prison.
