The tentative budget approved by the Collinsville School Board on Monday would have the district spending about $4.5 million more than it receives during the current fiscal year.

The budget was prepared using the same budget estimates as the previous year because the contract with the teacher’s union has not yet been approved by the School Board, Director of Business Affairs Uta Robison said. The Collinsville teacher’s union ratified the School Board’s proposed contract Wednesday, now the Board must vote on it.

Based on actual revenues and expenses from last year, the district operated at a $4,605.28 deficit. The districts revenues exceeded projections by about $2.5 million. Even with the projected $4.5 million deficit for the coming year, each fund in the budget is projected to have a positive overall balance at fiscal year-end. The Education Fund, from which teacher salary and benefits are paid, had a balance of $3.6 million on June 30, the end the district’s fiscal year.

Robison has until the next board meeting on Sept. 23, to make changes to the tentative budget.

The Collinsville Area Vocational budget of $1,696,946.00 was also approved by the Board. The CAVC budget, by state law, has to be balanced.

Board President Gary Peccola asked district Superintendent Robert Green to begin investigating ways potential overcrowding in the district can be handled. Unit 10 has about 6,650 students in its 11 schools, all of which are at or near capacity. Enrollment in the district has been growing steadily.

Green said an administrative team comprised of central office administrators and building principals will work to provide a preliminary plan, with options, to the Board by Christmas.
